What are Carved Signs

Carved signs are a traditional style of dimensional signage that combines craftsmanship with modern materials. Instead of being printed flat, the design is physically shaped into the surface, creating depth, shadows, and texture that give the sign a more substantial presence. This kind of dimensionality naturally draws the eye, which is why carved signs are often used when a business wants to make a strong first impression without relying on lighting or digital effects.
A Classic Technique with a Modern Twist
Here at Elmark Sign Company, we call carved signs the Cadillac of our work. Customers commonly use this type of signage to create a timeless, elegant statement in front of their business. Carved signs can be routed to create incised letters or graphics. Incised letter or graphics are carved into the high density urethane. Carved signs can also be prismatic, meaning the letters raise off of the sign. Using a dense urethane, a material in the plastic family, we are able to recreate the look of classic wooden signs, but with a cleaner presentation. Wooden signs tend to crack and splinter around the seams, while urethane signs do not.
Beyond their visual appeal, carved signs are valued for their versatility in use. They are commonly installed for storefronts, professional offices, residential communities, parks, schools, and corporate campuses. A carved sign can serve as a primary identification sign at a building entrance or as a secondary element inside a lobby or hallway. They are especially effective for businesses that want to communicate trust and permanence, since the dimensional carving gives the impression of something carefully made and built to last.
Another benefit is durability in outdoor environments. High-density urethane (HDU) does not absorb moisture the way wood does, which means it will not rot, swell, or attract insects. It also holds paint extremely well, allowing for crisp color contrast and long-term readability. This makes carved signs a practical choice for locations exposed to changing weather conditions. Even in harsh sun, rain, or cold, the structure of the sign remains stable, which helps preserve both its appearance and its message over time.
Customers who want to add a truly elegant touch can opt for a gold leafing finish. Our 23-karat gold leafing makes signs stand out, especially in the sun. We finish the signs by adding a layer of clear coat, the same type used in the automotive industry. This sturdy and strong seal helps your sign maintain its color and keeps it looking new for years to come.
Installation
Installing a carved sign depends on its size, weight, and where it will be displayed. Smaller signs are typically mounted directly to a building façade using hidden fasteners or standoff hardware that gives the sign a subtle floating effect. Larger exterior signs may be installed on posts set into concrete or attached to structural frames designed to support their weight and withstand wind load.
Proper installation is important not only for appearance but also for longevity. The sign needs to be level, securely anchored, and positioned for maximum visibility. In many cases, installers will also take care to seal mounting points and ensure that water cannot penetrate the back or edges of the sign. For commercial properties, installation may also need to comply with local permitting and zoning requirements, especially for larger roadside or monument-style carved signs.
Care and Maintenance
Caring for carved signs is relatively simple, which is one of the reasons they are so popular for long-term installations. Routine cleaning with mild soap and water is usually enough to remove dust, pollen, and surface debris. A soft cloth or gentle sponge is recommended to avoid scratching painted or gilded areas. Because HDU is non-porous, it does not require sealing or deep maintenance treatments like wood does.
Over time, it is also a good idea to inspect the sign for any minor wear, especially around edges or mounting points. While the material itself is highly resistant to weather damage, repainting or refreshing the finish can restore the original vibrancy if the sign has been exposed to years of direct sunlight. With basic care and occasional touch-ups, a carved sign can maintain its visual impact for many years while continuing to represent a business in a strong and professional way.
