What are Channel Letters

An important aspect of signage is visibility: a sign you can't see is a sign not doing its job. Placing a sign is easy enough, but what about signs that need to be seen at night? Mounting lights on a signpost or burying them in the ground both do the job, but if you want a premium and eye-catching look, channel letters might be your best option.

Channel letters are one of the most effective ways to make a business stand out both day and night. Instead of relying on flat graphics or external lighting, each letter is individually fabricated and illuminated, creating a clean, dimensional effect that is easy to read from a distance. This combination of structure and light makes them especially popular for storefronts along busy roads, shopping centers, and commercial buildings where visibility directly affects customer traffic.

Light the Way to Your Business

Illuminated channel letters are a striking choice for your business sign. You have the option to choose from a variety of customization options in order to create the perfect look for your storefront that captures customers’ attention any time of day.

Channel letters are custom made using aluminum cans and covered with a translucent face. LED lights illuminate the letters and logos, using either backlighting or front lighting. Businesses can choose from an assortment of colors for the acrylic faces, translucent vinyl, and trim cap.

Beyond their visual impact, channel letters are also a long-term branding tool. Because they are custom-built to match specific fonts, colors, and logos, they reinforce brand recognition every time someone passes by. Even from a distance or at high speeds, the combination of lighting and dimensional shape helps the sign remain readable and memorable. This is one of the reasons they are often used by national brands as well as small local businesses that want a more professional storefront presence.

Channel letters also offer flexibility in design scale. They can be sized to fit small awnings or stretched across large building facades. This adaptability allows businesses to maintain consistent branding across different locations, even when building sizes or layouts vary.

Channel Sign Lighting

Front lit channel letters have the LED lighting inserted at the base of the can, pointing away from the building and through an acrylic face. These letters can be directly affixed to the building or to a raceway when required. The effect is bright and uniform.

Backlit, also called halo-lit, signs are installed with spacers between the letters and the building. The LED lights are positioned inside of the letters, but pointing directly at the building. This type of lighting creates a halo effects.

Many business owners want their lighted signs to appear a different color during the day than at night. We can achieve this by adding perforated vinyl over the acrylic face. These can make a sign appear black during the day and white at night as the light shines through the vinyl.

In addition to these standard lighting styles, channel letters can also be combined with raceway mounts, which house electrical components in a single enclosure. This can simplify installation and maintenance while still delivering a clean finished look. Whether front-lit, halo-lit, or a combination style, LED technology ensures consistent brightness and energy efficiency over long periods of use.

Uses and Benefits

Channel letters are widely used for retail stores, restaurants, medical offices, corporate buildings, and entertainment venues. Anywhere a business depends on visibility and branding, channel letters tend to be a strong fit. They are especially effective in competitive commercial areas where multiple businesses share visual space and need to stand out after dark.

One of their biggest benefits is constant visibility. Unlike non-illuminated signs that disappear at night, channel letters continue working around the clock. LED lighting also keeps operating costs low compared to older neon systems, while still producing a bright, even glow. This makes them both practical and visually impactful over time.

Another benefit is durability. Channel letters are built from aluminum and acrylic, materials that hold up well against weather exposure. When properly installed, they resist fading, rust, and structural wear. This makes them a long-term investment that continues to perform year after year with relatively low maintenance.

Installation

Installing channel letters is a precise process that involves both fabrication and electrical work. Each letter must be carefully mounted to ensure proper spacing, alignment, and readability from a distance. Templates are often used to guide placement so the final sign appears balanced and professional.

Depending on the building and design, letters may be mounted directly to the façade or installed on a raceway. Raceway mounting groups wiring and power supplies into a single housing, which can simplify installation and reduce the number of wall penetrations. Direct mounting, on the other hand, creates a cleaner look but requires more individual wiring and careful sealing at each connection point.

Electrical connections must be properly installed and weatherproofed to ensure long-term performance. Because channel letters are illuminated, installation typically involves coordination with licensed electricians and adherence to local signage codes and permitting requirements.

Caring for Channel Letters

Caring for channel letters is mostly about keeping them clean and ensuring the lighting remains consistent. Over time, dust, dirt, and environmental buildup can collect on the acrylic faces, slightly reducing brightness. Regular gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soap helps maintain clarity without scratching the surface.

It’s also important to periodically check that all letters are lighting evenly. LED systems are long-lasting, but individual components like drivers or power supplies may eventually need replacement. Addressing dim or unlit sections early helps keep the sign looking uniform and professional.

Inspecting mounting hardware is another part of routine care, especially for exterior installations exposed to wind or weather changes. Ensuring that all fasteners remain secure helps preserve both appearance and safety. With simple maintenance and occasional checks, channel letters can continue to deliver strong visibility and branding impact for many years.
